 John Nicholson
John Nicholson is renowned for his outstanding children's information books, which are carefully researched, presented in an interesting, accessible format and feature innovative design to engage readers. Almost all of his books have won awards, as the list below indicates.

Although born in Singapore, John went to school in New Zealand and Australia and studied architecture at Melbourne University. John worked as an architect and graphic designer before becoming a full-time writer, illustrator and designer of nonfiction for children and young teenagers.

Deborah Niland

Leaving DoEWA   Deborah Niland

Deborah Niland was inspired to become an illustrator after seeing Noela Young’s drawings for The Muddleheaded Wombat – an Australian classic written by Deborah’s mother, Ruth Park.

Deborah has since gone on to create much-loved classics of her own, including the illustrations for ‘Banjo’ Paterson’s Mulga Bill’s Bicycle in 1973 and Hazel Edwards’s much-loved Hippopotamus series of books.

In 2006, Annie’s Chair was judged CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood, adding to a long list of awards for her work. Deborah’s attractive website includes a list of all her books and awards and a gallery of illustrations.

Leonie Norrington

Leaving DoEWA  Scholastic Profiles


Leonie Norrington was born in Darwin and spent most of her childhood on a remote Aboriginal community. She worked at a variety of jobs before studying journalism as a mature-age student. Currently, Leonie works as a journalist and feature writer. She also makes regular appearances as a presenter on the ABC television show Gardening Australia.


Shortlisted for the CBCA Book Awards 2003, The Barrumbi Kids is Leonie's first novel, which she wrote to show her grandson that Aboriginal and white people can and do live together in respect and harmony.
