The Internet is an educational resource
that students need to understand and also be supported
in making responsible choices within an educational framework.
The most positive way to deal with the issue of safety
online is to make students aware of the potential dangers
of the Internet and to encourage and support their development
of appropriate strategies for dealing with inappropriate,
offensive or illegal materials.
Teachers must ensure that students develop critical skills
to analyse information they read on the Internet from
an early age.
It is also important that students are taught about taking
responsibility for their use of online resources at whatever
level access is offered within a school and also outside
the school environment.
One such arrangement could be that:
- students must report any sites
they come across which they consider would cause
concern
- students will not deliberately
look for inappropriate websites
- students will not put offensive
material on the system, or use online tools
to bully other students

Acceptable Use Policies are written
agreements that formally set out the rules of Internet
use. Teachers must receive an Acceptable Use Agreement signed by the student or parent before granting students access to online services.
Sample Acceptable Use Agreement forms are provided as appendices to the DET WA Students Online policy.

Parents expect schools to show how their children are
being protected from harm when working online. There are
a number of strategies that schools can consider.
- A letter to all parents
setting out the school’s expectations
regarding Internet use.
- An information night for
parents can be helpful, particularly in primary
schools.
- Provide links to online information
for parents. Many resources linked from this
website are designed for parents as well as
teachers.
- Provide access to any printed
material held in the school through the school
library.
