Water - Curriculum Context
Students understand and appreciate the physical, biological and technological world and have the knowledge and skills to make decisions in relation to it.

Water is our most precious resource. It is essential to our existence. In Western Australia our dry climate, coupled with an increased demand on water resources, means we must all become more water conscious and proactive in our approach to water conservation.
Water Resources
The commitment to “developing an appreciative awareness of the interdependence of all elements of the environment” and encouraging “forms of resource use that are regenerative and sustainable” is clearly stated in the Core Shared Value, Environmental Responsibility and resources have been selected that reflect this outcome. A variety of media is represented and there has been an effort to locate resources that promote active participation and critical thinking.

Goldfields Pipeline - When construction was completed in 1903, this monumental engineering feat delivered life-giving water to many arid inland communities and continues to do so today. Mt CharlotteThe water travels 650 kms from Mundaring Weir in the forested Perth Hills, through the golden expanses of the Wheatbelt to the Mount Charlotte Reservoir which overlooks the important gold mining town of Kalgoorlie.

Australian National Strategies

Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world, rainfall is extremely variable and droughts are a common occurrence. As part of our environmental responsibilities, improving the management of our water resources becomes one of the greatest conservation challenges that we face. The National Water Commission and CSIRO are working to establish research initiatives which enables Australia to maintain a leading position in world water resources management.

International Issues
  • UN Water
    UN-Water was endorsed as the new official United Nations mechanism for follow-up of the water-related decisions reached at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the Millennium Development Goals.
  • Water for Life 2005- 2015
    A decade of action! The primary goal of the 'Water for Life' Decade is to promote efforts to fulfill international commitments made on water and water-related issues by 2015.
