| Football is any of a number of games in which two opposing teams attempt to score points by moving an inflated oval or round ball past a goal line or into a goal. |
In Australia, football is a popular winter sport both for players and spectators.
However, the term football has different meanings in different states. For example, Australian Rules was largely only played in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia until the advent of the National League in 1987. New South Wales and Queensland are strong Rugby League states, and the other codes of Soccer and Rugby Union have a minor following in most states.
The one common feature is that, with the exception of Soccer, the other football codes are played during the winter season.
Initially, all football codes were traditionally played by males, but in recent years women also play at all levels. |
