At the beginning of the 21st Century, we take for granted the sight of an aircraft in the sky and the speed at which flights can be made from one side of the globe to the other.

When we consider the devastating effects planes have had through the military aspirations of nations we can probably say that the development of powered flight was one of the most controversial achievements of the 20th Century.

Combined with an examination of how the development of flight has affected the society in which we live, the study of any area in this theme allows teachers great scope for units of study in the classroom.

The Centenary of the First Flight presents teachers with a varied selection of topics to explore with their classes. From Timeline histories, different flying machines, how planes fly, early pioneers of flight, the effect on our societyand design and contruction to name a few. Within these there is also scope for expansion.

For Australians the development of the Royal Flying Doctor Service can be viewed as an integral part of the country's History
