Easter - Curriculum Context

Students understand their cultural, geographic and historical contexts and have the knowledge, skills and values necessary for active participation in life in Australia.
Overarching Learning Outcome 8

Through this investigation, students may come to 'understand and value differing world views and perspectives and the contributions that various cultural and religious groups make to life in Australia'.

The importance of students being equipped to critically examine world-views (both religious and non-religious), especially those dominant in his or her background and school community is made explicit in the statement of core shared values that underpin the Curriculum Framework.

With these points in mind, teachers need to sensitively choose the materials they use with their classes, taking into account the knowledge, beliefs and values of their students and the community in which they work.

Key Websites

The following materials have been chosen to represent a range of aspects of the Easter festival, including its religious significance to the Christian community, and the various pagan traditions that have become part of the Easter celebration.

These include eggs, rabbits and chickens as representations of the concept of new life and rebirth, and the more recent, specifically Australian concern to promote the Bilby as a more appropriate symbol than the rabbit.
