Road
Aware Drivers (15-20 years) is
one of the three key focus age groups in the Program.
For this group, a Keys for Life pre-driver resource
for 15 and 16-year-old students in Years 10, 11 and 12
has been designed, tested and now offered for schools
to implement from 2004.
The course is designed to:
- motivate teenagers to gain supervised
practice as a learner driver
- increase teenagers’ awareness
of the risks associated with driving and promote
positive road-user attitudes and behaviours
- motivate and engage parents about
the importance of supervised practice

Every year in Western Australia more than 647 people aged
between 17 and 25 are either killed or seriously injured
in road crashes.
Factors such as over-confidence, poor hazard perception
skills, inexperience and risk-taking influence road-user
behaviours and outcomes for young people, and reduce young
people’s ability to understand and manage the diversity
and complexity of the road environment.
Issues for teenagers to consider include:
- That they tend to be overconfident
and inexperienced
- That they can reduce their crash
risk by practising more as learner drivers
- Driving under the influence of
alcohol
- Driving at excessive speeds
- Not wearing seat belts
- Driving while tired
|
A number of excellent Australian websites
provides resources to challenge students to address these
issues before they become licensed drivers.
