| The celebration of the Christian
festival of Christmas provides an opportunity for teachers to
investigate with their students, the historical, religious and
cultural significance of religious festivals in the Australian
community. |

Through this investigation, students
may come to 'understand and value differing world views
and perspectives and the contributions that various cultural
and religious groups make to life in a multicultural Australia'.
The importance of students being equipped to critically
examine world-views (both religious and non-religious),
especially those dominant in his or her background and
school community, is made explicit in the statement of
values that underpin the Curriculum Framework.
With these points in mind, teachers need to sensitively
choose the materials they use with their classes, taking
into account the knowledge, beliefs and values of their
students and the community in which they work. |
