International Polar Year provides an
excellent springboard for studies of both Arctic and
Antarctic areas.
In simple terms the Arctic is the
area around the Earth's North Pole. The Arctic includes
parts of Russia, Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland,
Lapland, and Norway as well as the Arctic Ocean. The
North Pole is at the center of the Arctic. Because the
Arctic is made up of islands and not one large landmass,
it is not a continent.
The Arctic is an ideal area of study for the Science,
Society and Environment and Technology and Enterprise
learning areas.
By investigating the interaction of the
physical, biological and technological worlds in the
Arctic as well as the historical perspective, students
can understand and appreciate the importance of this
unique environment and how it impacts on the rest of
the world.
They can apply this knowledge when considering the future
of the Arctic and make informed decisions about possible
social action for change.
