International Polar Year provides an excellent springboard for studies of both Arctic and Antarctic areas.
In simple terms Antarctica is an extremely cold continent which surrounds the South Pole and is covered by an icecap which is up to 15,600 feet deep.
Antarctica is an ideal area of study for the Science, Society and Environment and Technology and Enterprise learning areas.
By investigating the interaction of the physical, biological and technological worlds in Antarctica as well as the historical perspective, students can understand and appreciate the importance of this unique environment and how it impacts on the rest of the world.
They can apply this knowledge when considering the future of Antarctica and make informed decisions about possible social action for change.
