Why study Ancient Civilisations?

By studying ancient civilisations, we are enabled to marvel at humankind's cultural, intellectual, political, social, agricultural, technological and religious development. This development has made us what we are today in our respective regions of the world and has the potential to influence our decisions for the future.

How old is "ancient"?
Popular conception is that Civilisations are termed "ancient" if they existed about 2 000 years ago or before; therefore it is worth noting that the Incan and Aztec archaelological sites of Machu Picchu and Tenochtitlán respectively date back to about the fourteenth century A.D. and the Vikings to the ninth and tenth centuries A.D.
