Viewing in an Online World

Students view a wide range of visual texts with purpose, understanding and critical awareness.   English Learning Outcome 7
This approach to developing viewing and critical literacy skills in an online environment is suitable for students in Early to Late Adolescence.

The rapid increase in the use of the Internet in schools during the late 1990s means that most teachers now consider that access to the information it provides is essential for their students.

However, like all tools that we ask students to use, we must ensure that we empower them to use the Internet with purpose, understanding and critical awareness to meet their educational needs and purposes.

Students don't just need to consider the accuracy of the information provided on a website - they also need to learn to recognise how the presentation of the information visually on the screen influences how they interpret that information.

Teachers in all learning areas have the responsibility for ensuring that their students develop these skills, and it is particularly appropriate to develop these skills through the Viewing strand in English.
