Abridged Dewey Decimal Classification 13th edition overview

ADDC14 was released in April 2004 and is being used for SCIS records. Areas of significant changes from ADDC13 are described on the Classification page. For schools still upgrading their 570-599 Life sciences records to the changes in ADDC13 the following overview and table is provided.

The most significant of the revisions and expansions in ADDC13 were those to the 570-599 Life sciences. Topics affected included biology (570), ecology (now 577), plants (580) and animals (590).

574 Biology.

This number is no longer used. Biological processes are now classed in 571-575.

The ecology of organisms has moved from 574.5 to 577, e.g.

Forest ecology was 574.5, now it is 577.3
Desert ecology was 574.5, now it is 577.54

Within the 570s-590s the preference order for topics and their aspects has been reversed from organism/process to process/organism,

e.g. 591.1 Animals/physiology is now 571.1 Physiology/Animals.

There are some changes in the numbers for animals in the 590's, e.g.

Bears were 599.74, now they are 599.78
Giraffes were 599.73, now they are 599.638
Click on comparative table to see a list of the ADDC12 to ADDC13 number changes for major topics in the Life sciences, including Animals.

Records added to the SCIS database since 23 March 1998 have ADDC13 classification numbers. Most older records on the database have been converted from ADDC12 so you can use the database to find the ADDC13 numbers for items in your collection.
