CMIS has moved!

CMIS has moved from Central Office in East Perth to DET's WestOne Services building in West Perth. Read more.

Introduction to the service

The Cataloguing Section catalogues school library resources, including books, videos and computer software, onto Curriculum Corporation's SCIS database. The records are available to all Australian schools that subscribe to the SCIS database. WA public schools are covered by a statewide subscription to SCISWeb.

Creation of catalogue records requires specialised skills to analyse the contents of library resources, taking into account changes in information and curriculum.

Records contain:

  • bibliographic details so that a specific item can be identified
  • classification numbers so that items on similar topics can be placed on the library shelves together, and
  • subject headings so that the information contained in the item can be located using the school catalogue.

Resources are collected for cataloguing in the following ways:

  • Resources acquired by school libraries for which catalogue records are not available on SCISWeb. Priority is given to resources purchased by schools within the previous six months and these resources are catalogued in order of receipt.
  • Resources received by the Evaluation Section for review in Focus publications.
  • Departmental publications. A copy of each publication is provided to Cataloguing for Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) and as part of the legal deposit process.

The Cataloguing Section also provides metadata for learning objects and other resources included in the DET Resources Online.

SCISWeb licence and SCIS Authority Files

The SCISWeb licence agreement between the Department of Education and Training and Curriculum Corporation has been renewed to 2011. Schools will have the same access and passwords as applied in 2008.

WA public schools can now access the SCIS Authority Files online. Check the News pages for further details.
