Observation Criteria Table for Collaborative Activities - Individual Students
English, Speaking and Listening Strand, Level 1
The student listens to and talks with students, teachers and other known adults in routine classroom activities; and uses own variety of English and generally stays on topic, sharing personal experiences and using strategies to adjust communication in familiar situations.

Attempts to give directions and instructions to others. 10/8 Organised the seating arrangements for storytelling session.    
Asks and answers questions seeking information or clarification. 12/8 Correctly instructed a peer as to the procedure for using the computer.    
Attempts to observe agreed rules in structured classroom situations. 12/8 Waited patiently for her turn on the computer. 13/9 Put her hand up, and waited to be acknowledged, to ask a question.  
Cooperates with others on tasks. 28/7 Shared pencils, textas and paper with partner. 15/9 Agreed to give up her interview questions when others chose different ones. 26/9 Negotiated roles for the interview in Year 2 room.
Uses talk to establish relationships with others. 28/7 Used appropriate language to join the group of her choice.    
Asks, accedes to and refuses requests in agreed ways. 6/9 Put up hand and requested politely to be allowed to use tape recorder. 3/10 Instructed a peer to wait, & join in the next game, in an appropriate way.  
Attempts to adopt appropriate tone of voice and intonation. 29/10 Re-told Jack & The Beanstalk using different voices & intonation.    
Interprets and responds appropriately to non-verbal cues. 24/7 Was able to guess the correct song through the use of actions only. 1/8 Was correctly able to follow simple instructions (e.g. stand, good) given through hand signals taken from the Makaton Vocabulary.  
Demonstrates attentive listening in appropriate ways. 15/9 Listened carefully and without interruption while others shared their thoughts and ideas.    
Begins to adjust spoken language for different purposes. 24/7 During a news session, gave a recount of her holiday to the class. 12/8 Role played an angry mum in the drama corner. 24/9 Used appropriate language and intonation to conduct an interview with an adult.
Encourages and supports peers in speaking and listening contexts. 18/8 Acted as a guide to two peers who were playing a Barrier game.    
Asks and responds to questions and makes relevant comments. 24/7 Was able to answer questions about her holidays during newstelling. 31/7 Offered suggestions as to the type of information that could be placed on the Poster.
