Planning Investigations
Students critically review & reflect on their understandings, formulate questions as a focus for investigation, predict possible answers or formulate hypotheses & design suitable methods for organising & gathering information.
Locating
Designing a search strategy using multiple resources.
Search - library catalogue, CD-ROMs, Internet, journals, etc.
Refine search terms.
Conducting Investigations
Students identify sources of information; collect, organise & evaluate these sources; question the sources by comparing, identifying bias, perspectives; record their evidence; &d consider ways of remedying gaps in the information.
Selecting
Select information - skimming & scanning resources.
Use indexes and tables of content.
Evaluate information critically - bias, prejudice & inconsistencies.
Does the source of information have authority?
Make notes of relevant information - notemaking framework.
Record author, title, URL, date - bibliography.
Processing & Organising
Information from different sources.
Gaps in the information collected.
Outline the plan for your final copy.
Processing & Interpreting Information
Students translate & interpret new information; analyse information by distinguishing between fact / opinion, seeking collaboration, judging the credibility & relevance of information & identifying values; synthesise information to make conclusions & judgements; & decide how best to communicate conclusions.
Presenting
Prepare a draft copy and edit it.
Complete final copy.
Compile bibliography.
Evaluating
Evaluate the process.
Evaluate the product. Have you successfully addressed the research task?
Self-evaluation, peer evaluation, teacher evaluation.
Evaluating & Applying Findings
Students communicate findings according to purpose / audience; predict consequences & questions arising from conclusions as well as areas needing further investigation; identify implications for now/the future; modify original hypotheses; actively apply & practise strategies in applying key vales areas in their lives.
