Middle Childhood Phase of Development

Typically Years 3 to 7

As children grow they:
  • begin to see themselves as members of larger communities.
  • begin to understand and appreciate different points of view.
  • develop the ability to think in more abstract terms.
  • undertake sustained activities for longer periods.
  • learn to draw on a wider range of sources of information to answer questions and consider phenomena more widely.
  • reflect on their learning and work practices and consider ways in which these might be improved, modified or adapted for different situations.

Learning and teaching programs:

  • foster students' abilities to work collaboratively and develop social skills.
  • include activities which require group planning and decision making and interaction with people inside and outside the classroom.
  • encourage students to be take increased responsibility for managing and organising learning activities, as individuals and in groups of varying sizes.
  • allow students to explore a wider range of technologies and forms of communication and representation.
  • encourage students to experiment and investigate the advantages of different representational forms and technologies for different materials, purposes and situations.
  • provide learning experiences that emphasise and lead to an appreciation of both the commonality and diversity of human experiences and concerns.
  • are designed to help students develop a sound grasp of written language and numeric conventions.
