Mathematics Learning Area Outcomes
The Mathematics Learning Area Statement and the Outcomes and Standards Framework focus on the need for students to:
- Appreciate the role of mathematics in their own and other communities.
- Use mathematical thinking processes and skills in interpreting and dealing with mathematical and non-mathematical situations.
- Use numbers and number operations and the relationships between them.
- Use direct and indirect measurements and estimation skills to describe, compare, evaluate, plan and construct.
- Use their knowledge of chance and data handling processes in dealing with data and with situations in which uncertainty is involved.
- Describe and analyse mathematically the spatial features of objects, environments and movements.
- Use algebraic symbols, diagrams, and graphs to understand, describe and reason.

Mathematics Learning Area Outcomes
The term learning technologies should be taken to include any technologies which can be used to enhance student understanding. The use of learning technologies in Mathematics classrooms provide opportunities to enhance student learning and hence achievement of the outcomes. They may include such items as graphics calculators, scientific calculators, Math-Aids, videos as well as computer-based technologies.
A successful teaching and learning program in an outcomes focused environment integrating technology in Mathematics would need to:
- Promote innovative and student-centred approaches to learning.
- Develop individual and group learning programs as a consequence of recognising the diversity of students needs and learning styles.
- Develop a balance of specific focused and open ended tasks.
- Embed the use of technology in the learning outcomes for students.
- Ensure that any technology used improves the teaching and learning program and learning effectiveness.
- Take an inquiry-based and problem solving approach to learning.
