Integrating Learning Technologies into the LOTE Learning Area

The LOTE Learning Area
The Languages Other Than English (LOTE) Learning Area is the area of the curriculum in which student develop the knowledge, skills and understandings to communicate effectively and appropriately in languages other than English.
The study of a LOTE provides the opportunity for students to gain insights into another culture. The use of learning technologies is an excellent resource for teachers to provide students with real opportunities to communicate with speakers of the target language and to develop awareness of appropriate sociolinguistic and sociocultural language use.

Incorporating Learning Technologies
There are many topics, themes and discourse forms which lend themselves to the incorporation of learning technologies to maximize student learning. Word processing, desktop publishing, games software, email and the Internet offer opportunities to enhance students' use of the target language.
The use of learning technologies can provide additional opportunities for group work and collaborative learning. Texts can be manipulated to cater for students with different levels of proficiency. Different learning styles can be accommodated.
The LOTE Learning Area Outcomes and the Outcomes and Standards Framework focus on the different ways in which students use the target language and the knowledge and skills which are essential to effective language use.
The six LOTE outcomes are interrelated and cannot be achieved in isolation. The LOTE matrix illustrates how the LOTE outcomes can be addressed using appropriate learning technologies.
