The Swan Education District
The Swan Education District is located in Whadujuk Country and covers 1600 square kilometers with some overlap into Balardong Country. The District services schools from Tuart Hill in the west, to Wooroloo in the east, to Maylands in the south, and Bullsbrook in the north.
This website offers teachers information on the Swan District Region and provides an overview of Aboriginal Education and what makes this District unique. We invite you to contact the Aboriginal Education Team for support when addressing the needs of Aboriginal students, parents and the community. We can assist with cultural awareness, conflict resolution, reconciliation and other support issues.
The website will help address Aboriginal Education across the Curriculum. "Students should be taught life stories and family histories including a range of people and events."1 Our aim is to help teachers identify the key issues so that strategies can be developed in order to achieve a successful outcome and provide quality teaching and learning.
We would like to work with you to improve the educational outcomes for our children. "A culturally inclusive curriculum forms important links between pride in culture, self-esteem and educational achievement."2
In 2006, Paul Albert, the Director General of Education at that time, stressed the importance of Aboriginal Education and of making it a priority for WA schools.
The Aboriginal Education and Training Operational Plan 2005-2008 is now available in your school. It is the responsibility of all to improve the education outcomes of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. This web site offers educators a wealth of resources and information to enable schools to achieve the eight school outcomes for all indigenous students. It includes information about:
- The Aboriginal education team and portfolios
- Aboriginal education in the Swan District
- History of Noongar people in the local area and specific sites that schools can visit to enhance their Aboriginal studies and curriculum
- A list of culturally appropriate web sites and places to visit.
Please note: images on the Swan District Website are available for use within schools. The images can be photocopied and printed and used by students for educational purposes only unless otherwise stated.
