The Mid West Education District
The Mid West Education District extends from Dandaragan in the south to Exmouth in the north, Meektharra in the north east, and to Sandstone in the east. It covers an area between 500,000 and 600,000 sq. km (larger than Victoria), and serves communities as diverse as the City of Geraldton, wheat belt areas, fishing centres, mining communities and remote towns and settlements.
More than 50,000 people live in the Mid West Education District, of whom around 10,000 are students attending schools. Nearly 20% of the school population are Aboriginal.
Fifty-four government schools on forty-six sites serve the Mid West. These include:
- eighteen Level 3 primary schools located in several towns,
- four Level 4 schools and five Level 5 primary schools located in the town of Carnarvon and the City of Geraldton,
- ten district high schools,
- three remote community schools.
- one senior college in Geraldton,
- one senior high School in Carnarvon,
- one agricultural college, and
- one education support school.
From March to June, a multi-campus school operates on four sites on the Abrolhos Islands. Also within the District are the Bluff Point Camp School and the Carnarvon and Meekatharra Schools of the Air.
