Midlands District Aboriginal Education Team
The role of the Aboriginal Education Team is to provide support and guidance to schools and colleagues within the Midlands District. The team consists of the Manager of Aboriginal Education and two Aboriginal Liaison Officers (Northam and Merredin), who support District personnel in achieving effective partnerships between the Aboriginal community and the schools. Support and guidance is directed towards cultural sensitivity in dealing with Aboriginal students and their parents / caregivers. Other support is through liaison with families to address issues such as attendance and the benefits of ongoing education for their children.

Thea Buckley: Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO), for the Midlands District Education Office (MDEO)
Thea has been working in Aboriginal Education for a number of years. Thea first came to work at MDEO in 2001, as a young trainee. Now she has climbed the ladder to become the District's ALO. Thea's family connections are to the Buckley family in Sydney, NSW. Her parents moved to Perth before she was born, so she has lived in Wundowie all her life.
Thea is a multi-skilled person, involved with the Volunteer Fire and Rescue, and the Volunteer St John Ambulance in Wundowie. At the moment Thea is doing teacher training at Murdoch University and also completing her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment at CY O'Connor TAFE in Northam.
MDEO are very pleased to have Thea on board and she is highly respected by all work colleagues. She has a lot of passion for her work in Aboriginal Education.
Midlands Aboriginal Education Advisory Council
The Council meets to consider issues relating to Aboriginal Education in the District. It offers advice to the District Director and the Aboriginal Education and Training Team to resolve these issues leading to better outcomes for Aboriginal students in the District.
- Members are either elected at the Election Meeting or by Council's invitation.
- Council allocates travel, accommodation and catering funds.
- Most members are appointed portfolios such as Youth, Aboriginal School Based Traineeship, Follow the Dream Program, Parents, Attendance, Guest Speakers.
- Membership consists of individuals from community, schools, TAFE and government offices.
- Members of the Advisory Council for Aboriginal Education follow their agreed Code of Conduct when conducting Council business.
