The Kimberley Education District
The Kimberley is the northernmost region of Western Australia and covers an area of 421,451 square kilometres. The region includes the towns of Broome, Derby, Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Wyndham and Kununurra.
About 11,500 Aboriginal people live in the Kimberley, almost 40 percent of the region's population and almost one quarter of the total Aboriginal population in the state.
Aboriginal perspectives
Aboriginal heritage is a significant part of the heritage of all Western Australian people. This site will ensure that all teachers in the Kimberley have the opportunity to access information relevant to the town/community in which they teach. Teachers will have the opportunity to consider some of the issues which are of traditional and contemporary importance to Aboriginal people including those related to 'clash of culture'.
The purpose of this site is to assist teachers in Government schools in the Kimberley. The idea is to provide information on communities, schools and locality to assist teachers in developing focus on the learning needs of their students. Its intent is also to provide teachers and educators with ideas and suggestions for a more culturally inclusive classroom. The challenge for teachers is to integrate Aboriginal perspectives across all learning areas. This will enable teachers and learners to identify and utilise the connections between syllabuses and to enhance and maximise learning within and across key learning areas.
During the construction of this regional web site, many people generously gave permission for the use of their photos, knowledge, audio and materials, for which the Aboriginal Education team at the Kimberley District Education Office is extremely grateful.
