The Goldfields Education District
The demography of the Goldfields is extremely diverse and includes the main municipality Kalgoorlie-Boulder, smaller outlying towns, pastoral stations and remote Aboriginal communities. Many of these places thrive mainly on the mining industry. Others were once bustling towns or pastoral stations but are now either ghost towns or abandoned stations. The region is vast and many of the places hold special significance for Aboriginal people, in particular, those which hold an Aboriginal name pertaining to a Dreaming (Tjukurrpa) or site of significance.
The Goldfields District Education Office is located in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Its education support services extend to schools located as far north as Wiluna (536km away), northeast to Kiwirrkurra (renowned to be the most remote community in the world), and to Southern Cross 220km south of Kalgoorlie. The schools, for the most part are clustered into three cells; the Town Cell, the North Country and the Lands Cell. The Town Cell has 12 school sites within the CBD and 5 others including an annexe of East Kalgoorlie. The North Country Cell is made up 8 school sites, 2 of which are annexes, 1 attached to Menzies and the other to Laverton. The Lands Cell has 11 school sites including the annexe of Warburton.
The Aboriginal Education Team would like to acknowledge all the traditional custodians throughout the Goldfields Education District.
Acknowledgement and thanks also goes to the AIEOs, teachers, family and community members who have contributed information, advice and support for this project. We would welcome and appreciate further contributions including photos, stories, and information to add to the site.
