Resources in the Canning District
When collating, accessing and coordinating any of these recommended sources of information, teachers and schools should engage and communicate effectively with the local Noongar community to ensure inclusion of Noongar perspectives and participation Teachers can use their AIEOs to make contact with speakers or use the Aboriginal Services team at the Canning District Office.
The Canning River (or Dyarlgaard) is Noongar country of the Beeliar people who are one of the traditional owners of this important waterway. The City of Canning offers various educational and recreational activities through its Canning River Walk Trails that could be of interest to teachers. eg
- Butterflies, Birds & Bridges Loop (theme: Biodiversity – the spice of life)
- Around the river from Kent Street Weir to Greenfield Street footbridge and return
- Woodloes Walk (theme: The Canning and its people)
- From Mason’s Landing to Kent Street Weir
