Year Ten Try-a-Technology

The School Pathways Program-Defence Industries, in partnership with Challenger Institute of Technology, held two courses in Electro-Technology on 2-3rd July and 4-5th July at Challenger’s Beaconsfield Campus.

Twenty four students representing Comet Bay College, South Fremantle SHS, Atwell College, Applecross SHS and Rossmoyne SHS were selected by their teachers to participate in this opportunity.

Students were able to experience the tertiary environment of Challenger Institute of Technology and work in the laboratory facility used in the Electro-Technology courses. Students were also provided with information about training and career pathways in this area.
Students were provided with an overview of relevant pre-requisite skills and abilities required in Electro-Technology and encouraged to work hard on their maths at school.
Students learned how to measure electricity, install chips and wire an electric motor. They operated their own solder station and learned to solder and de-solder resulting in assembly of their own circuit board.

Students were provided with an overview of the training and pathways to careers in defence and allied industries and the predicted skills shortage in this area. This experience was the first step in identifying students for a possible School Based Traineeship supported by the DISPP in 2013.

Feedback

All participants completed a survey at the end of their course and the feedback was that the opportunity was enjoyed by all. Student comments included, “…it was a good skill to learn” , “…it was a great eye-opener” and “It was good learning things I hadn’t done before.”
