Try-a-Trade Metals and Fabrication

The School Pathways Program- Defence Industries conducted two “Try-a-Trade” days in Metals and Fabrication on Friday 8th June and Friday 22nd June 2012.

Using the recently completed Kent St Trade Training Centre, Como teacher Mr Ben Thurstun (who is an experienced tradesman himself) ran the sessions for students from Como Secondary College and Applecross SHS. A total of 28 students participated.

Students were given the opportunity to plan, measure and make a metal bottle opener.

Students had experience in metalwork at lower school and many have chosen metal work as a subject for Year 11.
Following the scaled drawing, students used the industry standard equipment at the TTC to measure, cut, file and weld their models, to take away with them at the end of the day.
Students were provided with an overview of training pathways to careers in defence and allied industries. Metal fabrication and mechanical fitting are disciplines within the Certificate II Engineering qualification proposed for 2013, under a School Based Traineeship model.

Feedback

All students enjoyed the day and Mr Thurstun was very pleased with the level of commitment shown by the students in this working environment. Students completed a survey at the end of the day and comments included, “I learned heaps and it was fun!”, “ I enjoyed designing and making things!” and “ I learnt a lot.”
