School visits Australian Maritime College

The School Pathways Program, Defence Industries in conjunction with the Australian Maritime College Tasmania held a series of school visits from 3rd-7th July 2012. The presenter was Mr David Harte, Associate Lecturer, National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics and participating schools included Hampton SHS, Lockridge SHS, Como Secondary College, Ballajura Community College, John Tonkin College, South Fremantle SHS, Applecross SHS and Comet Bay College.

Mr Harte spoke to over 400 students about the practical application of Mathematics in Maritime Engineering and how important it is to study maths at school.

Students were given a workbook from which to solve maths problems which included scaling, line of best fit, feasibility studies, wave refraction and integration.

Students completed each task after being shown the specific industry application on a power point presentation. They were able to see the testing tank in operation and how naval architects and engineers determined design capabilities and solved design problems. The dynamics of operating in a water environment were emphasised and specific scenarios presented for students to attempt using mathematical solutions.

Students and staff were made aware of the training pathways to begin a career in Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics and Naval architecture and the value of maths and physics in maritime careers. The AMC also operates the first two years of some courses at ECU Joondalup.

Feedback

Students and staff were amazed by the complex operations involved in both below and above sea operations. The current study to produce a “circular wave course” was widely embraced by students and served to inspire their imaginations.
