Pinjarra Senior High School - Robot Invasion or Take me to your leader

7 November 2012

Pinjarra Senior High School
ROBOT INVASION or TAKE ME TO YOUR LEADER

Pinjarra Senior High School was recently invaded by robots when staff from Scitech bought a van full of them down to the recently refurbished Science Department. 97 Students in Year 8, 9 and 10 were given a mission (to save the Earth of course) and then had to program the robots to carry out the mission. The robots are fitted with sensors for touch, sight and sound and by using a computer program students were able to input instructions for the robots to move on command, cross a reflective tape which activated the sensor on the underside of the robot and then move forward to push a destruct button to obliterate the invading aliens. Many students programmed their robots to do a little dance once they had crossed the reflective tape. The program was sponsored by the Defence Industry Pathways Program who represent all the industries that support our Defence Forces with strong links into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Colette Ballantyne is the Learning Area Manager for Science at the school and she said that their support will also mean that Pinjarra Senior High School will be able to purchase a set of robots and the program used to make them operate enabling the students to have a Robotics Club running at lunchtimes. The robots will also be a valuable resource to the classroom teachers when they are delivering topics to do with technology and engineering.
