Industry Tour Fremantle Maritime Industries Trade Training Centre

The School Pathways Program- Defence Industries in conjunction with South Fremantle Senior High School held an industry tour of the recently completed Trade Training Centre, located on the South Fremantle Senior High School Campus. This facility has been named the Fremantle Maritime Industries Trade Training Centre.

Industry representatives were addressed by Mr Christopher Fraser, Deputy Principal SFSHS, Mr Stephen Finch, Principal Consultant Trade Training Centres, Mrs Gail Manton, Principal Consultant School Pathways Program and Mrs Jennifer Casserly, Industry Pathways Broker, School Pathways Program.

Industry representatives from Raytheon, Divex, Orontide, BAE Systems, Oceaneering and Total AMS were in attendance, along with Challenger Institute of Technology. Although representatives from ASC, Stace, Austal, James Fisher, Thales and AVI were unable to attend, there will be future opportunities for these and other defence and marine industries to view the centre in the future.

The industry standard facilities at the centre include welding booths, a machining room, lecture/ classroom space and a working motor that has a mezzanine floor above. This has the capacity to become a wheelhouse, therefore replicating a working maritime environment The design of the centre is in accordance with South Fremantle’s “carbon neutral” rating. This has implications for airflow, utilisation of natural light, waste disposal and noise pollution.

All of the industries invited to this initial tour have been actively involved with the School Pathways Program and by raising the awareness of the facilities available, successful industry and training partnerships can be negotiated.

Feedback

Industry representatives were impressed with the high standard of equipment and facilities and have indicated that they look forward to strengthening partnerships with the School Pathways Program, and initiating new ones with the FMITTC to increase the number of students following pathways in these defence and allied industry skill areas.
