Primary School Robotics Program

Year 4 and 5 girls from Spearwood and Coogee Primary Schools came together to compete in the annual Hamilton SHS Robotics challenge held at Spearwood Primary School during week 8 of Term 3. The purpose of the workshop is to introduce students to the roll that robots play in society and to help them to integrate their design, literacy and numeracy skills to create and programme Lego robots.

The girls worked in groups to create robots that could compete in three races – a straight drag race, an up and around race and an obstacle course laid out between two classrooms. Once they were past the initial challenge of building a robot, they had to create three different programs to compete in each of the three races. Over the course of the two days I was particularly impressed with the way that the girls used their interpersonal skills to share ideas and support other groups to overcome some of the challenges that were faced.

Points were given out to reward students for their written reflections, behaviour, leadership, teamwork and performance of their robots across the three competitions. The winning team this year was the “Robo Makers” team who ended up with 480 points. Medals were given out to Budmi Wijesuriya, Kimberly Lanter and Elana Archer for their excellent leadership and teamwork skills while Mandy Ireland was awarded the “Robo Race Champion” for having the best all round skills across the two days.

The robotics kits used in the program were purchased from a funding grant obtained from the ‘Schools Pathways Program’ without which the course could not have gone ahead. In addition to this funding the ‘School Pathways Program’ supplied each of the primary schools with two of their own Lego robotics kits (last year) to help students to continue on with their interest in building and programming robots.
