Drone demonstration at Applecross SHS

In conjunction with Mr Chris Mounkley from local Defence industry Cybertechnology and Mr Tony Herbert (HOLA Science) from Applecross Senior High School, the School Pathways Program facilitated a visit to Applecross by Cybertechnology on Wednesday 26th September 2012.

Cybertechnology assembled 4 of their “Drones” in the school quadrangle so that the entire school population (1300 students and over 100 staff) were able to view the Cyber Eye 2V2, Cyber Wraith and Cyber Quad Maxi aircraft. Students from the Year 10 Academic Extension class then had an opportunity to hear a presentation by Mr Mounkley about the technology involved and deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) in defence and civilian contexts. Students asked insightful questions which were more than adequately answered by Mr Mounkley.

Students were made aware of the training and educational pathways required to work at a company such as Cybertechnology and the types of surveillance work carried out by drone technology. Thermal imaging applications were also demonstrated by video presentation.

The Cyber Quad Maxi aircraft was flown in the school quadrangle after safety requirements were instilled in all participants. Students were able to use the specialised vision equipment to view the images live from the flying Cyber Quad. Students were also informed of the certification and licensing required to fly the aircraft.

Cybertechnology complete a variety of projects for defence in Australia and work in the civilian context throughout the world.

Feedback

Staff were impressed with the presentation and students gave the experience “10/10”! Even the administration staff came out to view the flying drone!
