Awards and Stages

Pool or Calm Water

Vacswim classes operate up to 16 stages at pool or calm water centres in accordance with the Department of Education Swimming and Water Safety Continuum [PDF] (stages 1-9) and Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) personal survival (stages 10 to 12) and rescue awards (stages 13 to 16). A more detailed copy of the requirements for each skill listed on the continuum (stages 1-9) is available at Department of Education  Swimming Teachers Handbook and Guidelines [PDF].

Specific information regarding RLSS higher awards can be found here.

Beach or Surf Centres

At beach or surf centres the Department operates a combination of its Swimming and Surf Safety Continuum [PDF] (stages 1-9) and Surf Life Saving Association (SLSA) higher wards (stages 10 to 15). The skill progression in the ‘surf’ continuum differs slightly to the ‘calm water’ continuum in recognition of the variable conditions children and instructors encounter in this environment.

Higher stages at beach or surf centres include advanced surf awareness and the program is similar to that which operates in surf clubs. Specific information regarding the SLSA higher awards can be gained by contacting mail@mybeach.com.au .
