Climate change is a highly important phenomenon, and will become of increasing significance to this and future generations as its impacts are more broadly experienced and understood in coming decades.
Human beings have been identified as responsible for a significant component of existing and future climate change activity (anthropogenic change) via pollution associated with a range of activity based on / connected to fossil fuel consumption plus other activities that also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions e.g. use of agricultural fertilisers, landfill practices.
Human beings have undoubtedly created a significant problem, but the good news is that they can readily be involved in being part of its solution, and creating a more sustainable world for this and future generations.
The Climate Change Project aims to encourage students in years 5 to 10 to undertake class projects or activities that will develop their understanding of the topic of climate change. Students will participate under the guidance of a teacher who will register and coordinate student activities.
The Climate Change Project therefore provides an excellent means for schools to share and promote ideas and activities related to climate change which can then act as a catalyst for action in other school communities.
To contextualise this (specific) activity into a broader whole-school approach to Education for Sustainability (EfS), schools can then explore further the overarching planning framework for EfS that is AuSSI-WA.
For DET users, you are able to register your class to participate in the Climate Change program. This will provide access for your students to a number of additional resources including an Energy Graphing tool, Energy Usage Survey, and Discussion Forum.
