Religion in public schools
The teaching of religious education is governed by the School Education Act 1999 (The Act), sections 66-71, which states that the curriculum and teaching in Western Australian public schools is not to promote any particular religious practice, denomination or sect.
General religious education
General religious education (GRE) can be included in the school curriculum as part of teaching and learning activities. The focus is on the study of major forms of religious thought and expression that are characteristic of Australian and other societies in the world.
Special religious education
Special religious education focusses on the distinctive religious tenets or beliefs of a particular religion and is provided by volunteers who have been authorised to deliver a particular SRE program.
