Take the Challenge

Teachers are invited to Take the Challenge and get their students involved in a fun nutrition and physical activity program that promotes healthy lifestyle behaviours by:

  • Developing their understanding of the importance of regular physical activity, eating healthy food and drinking water.
  • Developing their decision making skills.
  • Fostering positive attitudes and behaviours that can inform and enhance the quality of their own and others’ lives.
  • Involving parents and the community to reinforce the messages.

Take the Challenge is aligned with the K-10 Health and Physical Education syllabus, the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents and national physical activity recommendations. It can be used as a resource for all health promoting schools as it is consistent with the Health Promoting Schools Framework. There are a range of resources available:

  • Teacher lesson book, with lessons integrated across all learning areas.
  • CD that complements the lesson book.
  • Seven maps with additional information that supports Society and the Environment and Science learning areas.
  • Student stickers and certificates.

Funded by Healthway, the program is the result of collaboration between WA Country Health Services, the Education sector, Diabetes WA, Cancer Council, WA School Canteen Association, Food Bank, WA Health Promoting Schools Association and the Heart Foundation. The new curriculum materials were written by the Centre for Learning Change and Development, School of Education, Murdoch University following extensive consultation with teachers throughout regional Western Australia.

Teachers can use the resources at any time; however health promotion officers throughout most of Western Australia will offer the program in their regions as a competition in either second or third term.

The teacher lesson book is available for download:
