The Department of Education's Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting policy requires that opportunities are provided to enable all students in Years 1-10 to participate in a minimum of two hours of physical activity each week, during the school day as part of student learning programs. Schools are also encouraged to provide opportunities for students to be physically active at other times.
To gain the benefits of being physically active, students must engage in two hours a week of moderate to vigorous physical activities to meet the requirement.
Moderate physical activity includes activities such as: active play, brisk walking, bike riding, dancing and circus skills. Vigorous physical activities are those that make students "huff and puff", including sports such as: football, netball, soccer, running, swimming laps and ballet.
For students to participate confidently in physical activity, teaching programs should incorporate the development of knowledge and understandings, attitudes and values, communication and decision making skills. Outcomes in the Health and Physical Education Learning Area are interrelated and contribute to the development of healthy, active lifestyles for students.
