ACHPER SHAPED Awards

The SHAPED Awards recognise excellence and innovation in Health and Physical Education / Activity and Dance programs and practices in Western Australian schools and their communities. These Awards replace the Healthy Active Lifestyle Awards which were conducted by ACHPER between 1995 – 2009.

ACHPER WA Branch is excited to present the SHAPED Awards which are proudly supported by the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Department of Education, the Physical Activity Taskforce, Police and Nurses Credit Society, the Association of Independent Schools WA and the Catholic Education Office.

You can apply for any of the following award categories and also be in the running to win the overall primary school winner or the overall secondary school winner.

Each category should describe a sustainable initiative that:
leads to increased participation and activity levels within a particular group
focuses on improving skill development and increasing the activity levels of students
is inclusive across gender, ability and / or ethnicity
provides challenges and opportunities for all students to develop healthy active lifestyles.

CATEGORY 1 DANCE INITIATIVE (primary and secondary)
Examples of Dance nominations could include, but are not limited to, programs that:

  • demonstrate a quality dance program
  • provide opportunities for presentations
  • facilitate and/or promote school community links
  • encourage maximum participation within, or across, year groups.

CATEGORY 2 HEALTH INITIATIVE (primary and secondary)
Examples of Health nominations could include, but are not limited to, programs that:

  • demonstrate a quality Health Education program
  • provide opportunities for students to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills that support healthy decisions
  • support the pursuit of healthy behaviours

CATEGORY 3 PHYSICAL INITIATIVE (primary and secondary)
Examples of Physical Education, Physical Activity, Sport or Outdoor Education nominations could include, but are not limited to, programs that:

  • demonstrate a quality Physical Education, Physical Activity, Sport or Outdoor Education program
  • increase focus on a specific group such as adolescent girls, year 11/12 students, inactive students
  • involve intergenerational interaction by linking students with seniors, or other community groups
  • involve daily fitness, after school or break time initiatives that aim to maximize participation across the whole school PE curriculum.

CATEGORY 4 OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO SUPPORTING SCHOOLS IN THE PROMOTION OF HEALTHY ACTIVE LIFESTYLES (NEW CATEGORY)
Providers who support schools to provide excellent programs that promote healthy active lifestyles can nominate to be recognised as a ‘school provider of excellence’
Examples of programs or initiatives that could form the basis of nominations could include, but are not limited to, programs that:

  • support the development and implementation of quality Health, Physical Education, Dance or Outdoor Education Programs
  • support the development and implementation of effective pedagogy in the Health and Physical Education Learning Area
  • foster effective links between schools and their community.

The winners of the 2011Western Australian Health and Physical Activity Promoting Primary School and the Western Australian Health and Physical Activity Promoting Secondary School will be announced at the formal presentation function in the Government House Ballroom on November 28. Category winners and ‘Other Provider’ winners will also be announced at this function.

NOMINATIONS
Enter initiatives or programs in any, or all, of categories 1, 2 and 3. All schools which nominate will be eligible to win the title of the Western Australian Health and Physical Activity Promoting School (one primary and one secondary).

The primary and secondary schools announced as the 2011 Western Australian Health and Physical Activity Promoting Schools will be the schools which demonstrate outstanding achievement in at least two sustainable initiatives that promote health and physical activity / physical education and/or dance across the school community and demonstrates adherence to the Health Promoting Schools Framework.

Schools will be eligible to win only one individual category prize, but must score highly in a second category to be eligible to be a 2011 Western Australian Health and Physical Activity Promoting School.

NOTE: In all categories there will be separate awards for primary schools and secondary schools. District high schools may choose to enter the primary or secondary category.

First Round (tick box) Nominations close Monday 15 August. Schools and / or Other Providers which submit first round nominations that are considered by the judging panel to be exceptional will be invited to provide further information by 5.00pm Monday 17 October.

PRIZES FOR SCHOOLS
The two Western Australian Health and Physical Activity Promoting Schools will receive a cheque for $875 and a framed certificate.
The winning schools will also be profiled in the media.
Schools announced as the most outstanding primary and secondary nominations in each of the three categories will receive $250 and a framed certificate. The program coordinators of the programs announced as the most outstanding primary and secondary nominations in each of the three categories will receive $200, a framed certificate and an ACHPER Polo Shirt.

Certificates of High Commendation will be presented to runner up schools and programme coordinators at the presentation event. Certificates of Commendation and Participation may be presented at the presentation event or may be posted to schools and programme coordinators.

FOR ‘OTHER PROVIDERS’
The ‘Other Providers’ winners which are recognised as being providers of excellence will be invited to attend the presentation evening to accept their receive a framed certificate and will receive up to three free ACHPER Polo Shirts per provider. These providers will also be invited to display their banner at the presentation evening.

SUPPORT
The Physical Activity Taskforce will again support regional schools which are announced as winners to attend the presentation evening on Monday 28 November and will also provide financial support towards registration for nominating schools to attend the ACHPER WA State Conference on Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 November.

BEST PRACTICE
A brief summary of each winning schools’ program/project will be published on the ACHPER WA website in March 2012. Please go to the Awards page to view the reports of the successful 2010 nominations.

The ‘Other Provider/s’ recognised as being outstanding will also be profiled on the ACHPER WA website.

HOW TO NOMINATE
1. Click here and scroll down the page to download the tick box nomination form for electronic completion or the tick box nomination form for completion by hand
2. Complete a Nomination Form for each category you are entering
3. Return you tick box nomination form to ACHPER by email, post or fax by close of business on 15 August 2011.

JUDGING
Nominations will be judged by a panel which may consist of representatives from ACHPER (WA), the Physical Activity Taskforce, the Department of Sport and Recreation, the Department of Education, the Catholic Education Office, the Association of Independent Schools WA, staff from government and non-government schools and / or tertiary institutions.

The judging panel may use their discretion to move an entry from one category to another where it is seen to fit across more than one category, or if they feel it has been entered in the wrong category.

Judges for each category will individually score each nomination in their category and will then meet to discuss each nomination and agree on the final overall score for each nomination. The ACHPER WA Executive Officer will collate the scores cross all categories to arrive at the winning nominations.

SCORING
Winning nominations will score more than 85 points overall and will demonstrate sustainable programs that encompass physical activity and health promotion, as well as links to the community, in at least 2 categories.

Highly Commended nominations will score between 70 and 84 points and demonstrate sustainable programs that encompass physical activity and health promotion, as well as links to the community, in at least 1 category.

Commended nominations will score between 60 and 69 points and demonstrate sustainable programs that encompass physical activity and health promotion, as well as links to the community, in at least 1 category.
