Languages Teacher Development Centre Co-ordinators (TDCs)

The Languages Teacher Development Centre (TDC) Program provides practical support for all teachers of language from primary to Year 12.   Currently there are thirteen school-based K-10 Languages TDCs who are provided with 0.2FTE to support the teaching of Aboriginal Languages, Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian and Japanese across the state.

Support for teachers includes:

• collegiate networking and professional development opportunities;
• individualised support including school visits;
• development and sharing of teaching and learning resources;
• dissemination of information on Languages education;
• using the K-10 Scope and Sequence documents in planning for teaching and learning; and
• practical classrooom strategies that strengthen the link between Languages and literacy.

The literacy strategies are linked to research, such as the relationship between listening skills and learning capacity.  The strategies are referenced to NAPLAN support materials and are shared through network meetings, newsletter articles and modelled through demonstration lessons.  A range of additional support materials produced through the program include teacher programs and a DVD modelling speaking and listening dialogues.  Further details and access to these resources can be obtained from Wendy Hewitt.

 All public school language teachers across the state are linked to a particular network. 

In addition, five Languages WACE TDCs have been appointed to support the implementation of the senior secondary courses.

The Languages TDC Program provides extensive support for teachers of Aboriginal Languages.  This includes classroom ready resources that can be adapted to suit the Aboriginal Languages of that network.   Aboriginal Languages TDCs are located within the metropolitan area and at Fitzroy Crossing District High School, Dawul Remote Community School and East Kalgoorlie Primary School.  The TDC program, in conjunction with the Workforce Policy and Coordination Directorate, provides support and career opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.  Further information can be obtained from Lola Jones.
