Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. It involves making judgments about what students know, can do and understand. The close relationship of assessment to teaching and learning is captured in such distinctions as assessment for learning, assessment as learning and assessment of learning. These distinctions are generally seen as formative (ongoing) and summative (end-of-unit or end-of-course) assessment.
Practical support is available to assist teachers with assessment in public schools including descriptions of expected standards
and A-E Exemplars.
Expected Standards: C Grade Descriptors
Descriptions of expected standards (linked to an end of year C grade) have been developed to assist principals and teachers
to make judgements of student achievement for end of semester reporting.
The Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting policy requires all public school principals and teachers to make judgements
of student achievement in relation to expected standards. Descriptions of expected standards (linked to an end of year C grade)
have been developed to assist principals and teachers in this process. Decisions regarding ‘if’ and ‘how’
to use the expected standard descriptors are made by individual schools.
A-E Exemplars
The samples of student work included within this resource will support teachers to make judgements in relation to the expected
standards that earn an A-E grade in Years 1-10. They have been developed in collaboration with practising teachers to assist
in reporting student achievement to parents.
