How do I know if my child is suited to Gifted and Talented programs?
Gifted and talented children should be able to perform (or have the potential to perform) well ahead of children of the same
age, for example talking or reading at an advanced level. Although the level of giftedness can vary considerably from child
to child, there are general indicators that can help you identify if your child is gifted and talented.
Thinking skills – your child:
-
can master a new skill with unusual speed and has a quick and accurate recall
-
can remember and make connections between past and present experiences
-
has a well advanced sense of humour
-
is resourceful and creative, and improvises well in play.
Learning style – your child:
-
has great curiosity, motivation and a desire to learn
-
becomes bored or frustrated easily if not challenged
-
has advanced planning skills for their age
-
uses unusual or imaginative ways to do things.
Speech and language skills – your child:
-
has an advanced level of language skills
-
is able to understand and carry out complicated instructions for their age
-
has advanced skills in reading, writing, or using numbers.
Social skills – your child:
-
is sensitive to the needs or feelings of others
-
may get on better with older children rather than children of their own age
-
may be able to take on responsibilities usually given to considerably older children.
Visual and spatial skills – your child:
-
has advanced skills with puzzles, building and construction materials, drawing, design or painting.
Gifted and talented children will do best in an environment that supports and stimulates them and fits well with their abilities
and interests. If you think your child is gifted and talented, please speak with your child’s teacher.
