Katanning Residential College is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Heart of the Great Southern. It is situated next door to the Katanning Senior high School which was ranked third most improved government school for TEE scores in 2004. The residential college and senior high school provide a perfect setting for a quality education, away from big city pressures. Providing accommodation for up to 60 students, Katanning Residential College is large enough to provide all the facilities that modern education demands, but small enough to retain its friendly and caring atmosphere.
Founded to meet the needs of families living in the Central Great Southern, the Katanning Residential College is co-educational and enrols students from Years 8 to 12. The residential college provides home-style accommodation for children ranging from single to 4-share rooms with ducted heating and shared bathrooms.
At the Katanning Residential College we believe that students perform best and reach their full potential only when set real challenges provided by the high school with its professional caring and involved staff. This, along with the morals, values, and extra-curricular activities provided by the staff at Katanning Senior High School, gives the students a sense of achievement and self respect. We emphasize the traditional values of hard work, fair play, and pride in one’s appearance and behaviour. We are confident that our strong partnership will, as always, produce students that are confident in themselves and fulfil their potential.
Our supervisors have wide experience in the residential college industry. The policy of the Katanning Residential College is to lead through example by practising respect, concern and friendship towards our boarders. Our staff provide strong leadership in practising solid values and making ‘right’ choices. They are concerned and caring people who ensure that our students’ needs are met in an efficient and compassionate way.
The organization of recreational activities and outings for college residents is one of the most important duties for our supervisory staff - activities like joining in the fun of local town competitions such as go-cart racing at our Multi-Cultural Festival. Activities have included day trips to Albany Laser Park and theme parks in Perth; spending time on a sheep farm; fishing and nature walks; trips into the country and to the beach; and visits ranging from a day to a week in interstate cities.
Our supervisors work hard and consider the students’ comments when planning all outings. We are dedicated to the needs of our students as they are important to us and to each other. To promote a family environment, all the outings are aimed at fun and relaxation, where the students can come together and share in something as equals and come back to the residential college with the bond of shared experiences.
Students at the Katanning Residential College have a large range of quality facilities and equipment for their use.
The residential college provides access to computers and high-speed internet networked with the school; a stylish lounge and dining area with a big screen TV; a music room and a games room; and a student canteen. The separate male and female living quarters each have their own lounge rooms and gymnasiums. The Katanning Senior High School has dedicated, award-winning teaching staff. Teachers provide tutoring services for residential college students in the evenings for all subjects, including music.
In addition, the Katanning Residential College has a cinema/auditorium plus an indoor recreation centre where hockey, basketball, netball, indoor cricket, volleyball, badminton and much more can be played. Also available to the students is an outdoor basketball and tennis court, a large swimming pool, trampoline, horse stables and a tack shed. Adjacent to our college is a football oval, hockey field, 18-hole golf course and squash courts.
Along with the College Band and College Hockey team, Katanning Residential College promotes involvement and access to the large range of sports, clubs, and community groups offered by the town, as well as the excellent Amateur Dramatics Society.
Katanning Senior High School enjoys outstanding academic success and
has a proud record of success in the TEE, with a vast majority of students
progressing to TAFE or University. In Years 8 and 9 there is a heavy
emphasis on the fundamentals, but the students are also exposed to languages,
computing, art, drama and music.
