Step 1 Activities

This section helps you focus on what you will be doing within the Community Service program. It enables you to think about what you are going to do and to reflect and record tasks and skills completed during the placement.

Step 2 Values

This section identifies five core values.

The Community Involvement website helps you match what you already have against each of these values. Each value consists of practical examples to help you think about what you may have done to develop that value as well as the opportunity to add examples of your own.

Value: A pursuit of knowledge and commitment to achievement of potential

Definition: Each person strives, throughout his or her whole life; to understand the social and natural world in which they live and how best to contribute to these worlds.

Example: You enjoy being in a team and the ongoing social contact with team members. For example you belong to the local tennis club.

Value: Environmental responsibility

Definition: Respect and concern for Australia’s environment to ensure all resources can be regenerated and sustainable.

Example: Wherever possible you conserve the environment. For example, you ride a bike or walk because cars are one of the worst pollutants in today’s society.

Value: Respect and concern for others and their rights

Definition: Being sensitive to and showing concern for, the well-being of other people; showing respect for the life and property of other people.

Example: You treat others with care and compassion. For example, you try not to hurt other people’s feelings

Value: Self-acceptance and respect of self

Definition: Each person is unique. Each person can gain fulfilment in their lives through developing self-respect, behaving responsibly, making ethical decisions, and being open to learning opportunities

Example: You are self-disciplined. For example, you arrive on time even though others may choose to be late.

Value: Social and civic responsibility

Definition: Social and civic responsibility involves being a good citizen by respecting authority, valuing our multi-cultural society, and following the Australian way of life.

Example: You resolve conflict. For example, you know that another student is bullying a fellow student. You take steps to get support for the situation to be resolved.

Step 3 Summary

This section summarises and completes your progress through the Community Involvement website. This is where you have the opportunity to reflect on the values you have developed and those you may want to develop further.
