James Adamini

York District High School
Year 10

James Adamini is currently a Year 9 student at York District High School. James shows a special interest in English, and, for the past two years, has been a member of the school’s Emergency Services Cadet Program where he has attained the rank of Cadet Section Leader. James has also been a member of the 2005 Youth Parliament Program. Apart from school James is actively involved in the York RSL Sub-Branch and has carried their banner for the last two ANZAC Day parades. Upon completion of Year 12, James intends to pursue a career as an officer in the Australian Army.

The ANZAC Student Tour will be James' first overseas experience, and given his strong interest in military history, he is very excited to be able to visit some of the places that most of us have only ever read about. James has about 17-20 family members who have seen military service. One of his great uncles, Stanley Weeks enlisted with the 2/14th Australian Infantry Battalion in WW II. He was awarded the Military Medal for "great courage and initiative whilst under fire" at Gona. Another family member, Irwin Ashbolt, served with the 10th Light Horse at Gallipoli during WW I. Another great uncle, Angelo Adamini was a Captain in the Italian Alpini (mountain troops) in the Second World War. Angelo's brother, Gildo, was highly decorated by the American Army for his work as a partisan, also during WW II. James' eldest brother is currently serving in the Australian Navy.

Tegan Chick

Tegan Chick was born in Geraldton in 1990 and has lived there her entire life. As a Year 10 student in 2005 she attended Geraldton Senior College and will very proudly represent this school whilst on the ANZAC Student Tour. In 1997 Tegan lived in Canada for a year and travelled around some parts of America so the ANZAC Student Tour will be her second overseas trip. In 2006, the Chick family is moving to Perth and Tegan will be attending Perth Modern School.

Tegan has been involved in many extra-curricular activities including, Tournament of Minds and the United Nations Youth Association Hammarskjöld Debate. Tegan loves playing water polo, netball and basketball and has represented her school in tennis. Music is a major part of Tegan’s life. She has played the piano for about seven years and the flute for five. When Tegan finishes her schooling, she intends to go travelling and then to university to probably become a teacher.

Tegan is looking forward to representing Geraldton and Western Australia on this tour and is sure she will love experiencing other cultures. Tegan looks up to the ANZACs as people who created Australia’s identity and respects the sacrifices they made and the hardships they endured in order to defend our mother country and homeland.

Elisha Clifton

Esperance Senior High School

Elisha Clifton is a Year 10 student at Esperance Senior High School, who enjoys all subjects and has won outstanding student awards each year since Year 8, and also winning the citizenship award this year. Since 2001 she has represented her school in Tournament of the Minds gaining tournament honours at the 2004 National Final. Last year Elisha represented the Roe electorate at the 2004 State Student Parliament and attended the 2005 UWA Campus Challenge. Swimming at the beach and learning to surf are some of Elisha’s favourite pastimes and she has been in the interschool swimming team. A love of music and recreational dance has seen her play clarinet in the school concert band, study piano and participate in the local dance school. Tennis and netball are her sporting interests.

Elisha is very excited about the Anzac Student Tour. She is aware of the significance of Anzac Day, having represented her school and country overseas at the 2005 Dawn Service at Hellfire Pass on the Burma/Thailand Railway, and the wreath laying service at Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Thailand. It was a privilege for her to talk with four ex-prisoners of war held captive on the railway as they shared their stories. Her grandfathers both served in World War 2, one in a hospital unit and the other in the 10th Light Horse.

Representing her school and country overseas is a privilege Elisha values and she is looking forward to visiting Gallipoli, France and Belgium seeing sites that are such a significant part of Australia’s history and the development of the ANZAC legend.

Hayley Davis

Leeming Senior High School

Hayley Davis is a 15-year-old student at Leeming Senior High School. For three years she has been a part of the Academic Extension Program. At the end of 2003 her peers elected her as one of two Year 9 student councillors for 2004. She was then re-elected for 2005 and 2006. In the winter season she loves playing netball and is a qualified umpire. In January 2005 she competed in the Australian U16 Softball Championships, as a member of the West Australian team. She also partakes in rowing and is an avid AFL supporter. A lover of music, she is a cellist and sings, both with a choir and solo. In her spare time she volunteers with disabled students and charity organizations, dances and enjoys art. Her ambition is to become a journalist and she hopes to one day write for the National Geographic. She also intends to be involved in musical theatre.

Her great grandfather on her mother’s side served in World War 2 with the 2/6th Field Park Battalion (Royal Australian Engineers). He was a prisoner of war in Changi for five years. Her grandfather served for three years with the British Commonwealth Occupational Forces in Japan. He also served in the Korean War as part of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. Hayley’s great-great grandfather, Creswell was a member of the 10th Light Horse during World War 1. Her great grandfather on her father’s side, served in WW2, and the Boer War and another great-grandfather was a Sergeant during WW2.

As one of 11 student representatives selected to attend the World Expo 2005 in Aichi, Hayley was honoured to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Japan. She hopes to gain as many values and much knowledge from her journey on the ANZAC tour 2006.

Daryl Eagle

Clarkson Community High School

Daryl Eagle is a Year 12 student and the Head Boy at Clarkson Community High School where he is completing his TEE. Daryl enjoys all of his subjects, which include History, Music and Human Biology. Throughout Daryl’s high schooling he has achieved two academic scholarships and one music scholarship as well as a number of citizenship and academic awards. He is actively involved in the Army Cadets being the highest rank in the Army Cadet System, CUO (Cadet Under Officer) and also the Cadet Company Commander of Wanneroo 53 Army Cadet Unit for the second year. Daryl has written a guitar book called ‘Guitar Skills Volume 1’ which is sold at various music stores. He also owns his own guitar tutoring business and is a guitar teacher at a music studio. Upon leaving school, Daryl would like to pursue a career as a music teacher or an Army Officer.

Daryl’s family has a strong military background. Daryl’s Great-Great Uncle, Samuel Hatton, was born in England and served in World War 1. He was gassed in the trenches of the Western Front in Europe and served at the Boxer Rebellion in China. Daryl’s Great-Uncle, Jack Stanley Young, Service No WX 4332 - 2/16th Battalion, was born in England, and came with his parents as a teenager to WA. Jack was in the Army Reserve already when World War 2 commenced and trained at Northam Army Camp. He served in the Palestine-Syrian campaign and in New Guinea at Ramu Valley mentioned in the book about the Battalion “1000 Men at War.” This will be Daryl’s first experience of overseas travel. He is particularly interested in visiting the Western Front where his Great-Great Uncle served in World War 1 as well as seeing all of the European battlefields where so many Australians gave their lives for their country.

Amy Ellis

Amy Ellis is currently a Year 11 student at All Saints’ College. Amy enjoys all subjects but shows special interest in Science and SOSE, where she has achieved numerous school and national awards. In 2002, 2003 and 2005 Amy has gained the All Saints’ College Academic Prize for her year. Amy competes in many sports, such as netball, athletics and touch rugby, and her major achievements include being selected in the 2004 State U16 Touch Football team, achieving Runner-Up in her schools Smarter Than Smoking AFL School Girls Cup team and gaining Champion Girl for Athletics in Year 7, 9 and 10. Amy has completed a community service course with her school, where she volunteered to work in the Willetton Child Care Centre. Amy has yet to decide her future career aspirations.

A veteran traveller, Amy is looking forward to having her first trip to France, Belgium and Turkey. Amy is most looking forward to experiencing the rich history of the regions to be visited, some of which linking to her own family history as Amy’s own family has a vast military history. George Bernett Fraser and William Norman Fraser (Amy’s Great-Great-Great Grandfather), brothers, fought in France on the Western Front (a destination for the tour) during WWI. Their brother, Donald Leonard Fraser, rose to the rank of Lieutenant and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in Tobruk in WWII. Keith William Fraser (William’s son) fought in the navy during WWII, and then joined the Australian Airforce in 1950 where he retired as Air Commodore in 1978.

Jodie Fryer

Rockingham Senior High School

Jodi Fryer is now a Year 12 TEE student at Rockingham Senior High School, where she has been a student councillor for the past two years participating in a variety of leadership roles. Jodi is interested in science and she studies Chemistry and Biology. During her past four years at Rockingham Senior High School, Jodi has achieved the Dean’s Award for both semester 1 and 2 in Year 10 and was awarded a $500 scholarship for being a top student in science for Year 10. Jodi’s interests include being a role model for younger generations, spending time with family and friends, shopping and animals. Upon leaving school, Jodi intends to pursue a career as a Veterinary Surgeon.

The ANZAC Student Tour for 2006 will be Jodi’s first experience of travelling overseas and she is excited to visit places, which helped originate the ANZAC spirit with which she is so familiar. Jodi is also looking forward to experiencing totally different cultures and to be a representative of her state and school is something she is proud of, as she is the first student to ever represent her school in this competition.

Through her research for the ANZAC Tour speech, Jodi and her family have come to discover the story of an ancestor who fought as a 2nd Lieutenant for the 14th Battalion. He fought in Gallipoli and died during the Battle of Lone Pine in August 1915. During his time at war he was awarded 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and a Victory Medal. He was buried at the Lone Pine Cemetery/Memorial, Gallipoli, which Jodi hopes she will visit.

Bridgette Garbon

Brigette Garbin is currently a Year 11 student at St Brigids College, where she boards during the school year. When she is not boarding, Brigette lives in the small rural town of Bruce Rock. This year, Brigette commenced TEE studies, and enjoyed the subjects of English, Political & Legal Studies and History. She received awards for all of these subjects, as well as being awarded Runner-Up Dux of her year. During her time at St Brigids, Brigette has represented her school in athletics, swimming, cross-country, basketball and hockey teams. Upon leaving school, Brigette intends to pursue a career in journalism or law.

The ANZAC Student Tour will be Brigette’s first experience of overseas travel and she is especially looking forward to visiting areas in Turkey where Australian soldiers fought, such as The Nek and Lone Pine. Brigette is absolutely thrilled to be the Catholic representative for her school and State, and hopes that the tour will not only be a fantastic learning experience, but also a way for her to pay tribute to the thousands of men who sacrificed their lives for Australia.

Tamara Jones

Lockridge Senior High School

Tamara Jones is currently in Year 12 at Lockridge Senior High School where she is studying for the TEE. While studying English, History, Geography and Maths, Tamara is greatly involved in the school farm, which she has represented at many prestigious events like the Perth Royal Agricultural Show, Brunswick and Margaret River Agricultural Show.

During primary school, Tamara competed every year in the schools Public Speaking competition and came away with three silver and one gold medal. In Year 9, Tamara took part in the school debating team where they came third in their division. Later in Year 10, she attended mock-parliament in the 175th Celebration of the Founding of the Swan River Colony and Centenary of the Parliament House Building. Also in Year 10-11, she participated in the Rotary 4-Way Test and after competing in district competitions, she went onto the state finals where she unfortunately didn’t gain a place.

Outside of school, Tamara enjoys playing softball, which she has played for four years and before that, six years of t-ball. For seven years, Tamara trained in the art of ju-jitsu. In Year 10, she was awarded “Champion Girl” at her schools sports carnival and in two consecutive softball seasons, was recognized as the “Most Valuable Player”.

In hoping to apply for a job in foreign affairs as a diplomat, Tamara sees this tour as a great opportunity to be an ambassador for her school, state and country and is very excited at the prospect of overseas travel. She sees the trip as an excellent learning curve and a chance to further broaden her horizons

Rachael Michael

Born and bred on a farm, Rachel Michael currently attends the local Toodyay District High School as a Year 10 student. Here, she has been on the student council for three years and was this year elected School Captain. For two years she has thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the T.D.H.S. Emergency Services Cadet Unit. Through her leadership roles, Rachel is heavily involved in organizing and speaking at school ANZAC and Remembrance Day Services. She has received the school Academic Excellence then DUX Awards from year 3 to 10, and this year was awarded the ‘Caltex Best All Rounder’. Rachel has been a primary and secondary Faction Captain and has been active through sports both in and out of school. She has received several sporting awards, including a 2005 Active Achievers Award at Country Week. Next year Rachel will be boarding at Santa Maria College where she plans to complete her TEE. In the future, Rachel intends to pursue a career as a journalist and TV reporter.

Rachel is determined to keep the ANZAC legend alive in Australia’s youth and is thrilled at this unique opportunity to do so. She looks forward to visiting the battlefields and paying her respects to all those who served there. Rachel’s great-great uncle, ‘Don’ Michael enlisted with the 27th Battalion during World War One and served in Egypt, France, Belgium and Gallipoli. He was awarded the French medal of bravery ‘Croix de Guerre’ for cutting enemy communication lines amidst heavy battle. Rachel has several other relatives who fought in France during World War One, some of whom never returned, so this year’s destination will have personal meaning for her

Sarah Mulholland

Mount Lawley Senior High School

Sarah Mulholland is a Year 9 student at Mt Lawley Senior High School were she studies Italian and German as part of the school's Special LOTE Program. Sarah enjoys a number of extra-curricular activities, especially in the music area. She plays clarinet and saxophone, both classical and jazz, and is a member of two school ensembles. In July 2006 she will be travelling to Singapore and Malaysia with the Woodwind Orchestra to perform at a major music educators conference. In addition, she has captained her interschool debating team for the last two years, and participated in extension Maths and Science programs.

Sarah developed an interest in history after researching her family tree for a Society and Environment project. Two of her great-grandfathers fought in World War I, one landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 with the 16th Battalion and remaining there until August when he was wounded at Sari Bair. Fortunately he survived, as did the other. He was wounded in 1917 at Polygon Wood near Ypres when fighting with the 32nd Battalion. Sarah's grandfather served with British forces in north Africa in World War II, and she hopes that he will be able to travel from Scotland to join her at one of the commemorative services she will attend in Europe.

Sarah is proud to be representing her school, state and country as a participant on the tour. She is also proud to be representing her family, and making a personal acknowledgment of the hardships endured and sacrifices made by her forebears.

Kristy Ninyette

Kelmscott Senior High School

Kristy Ninyette is currently a Year 9 student at Kelmscott Senior High School. Kristy enjoys all subjects but shows a special interest in English, Performing Arts and Physical Education. Kristy has been involved in the girls football and cricket team with both of them winning grand finals. Kristy was a student councillor in Year 8 and was recently voted for a year 10 position. Kristy's other interests include dance, music, reading and spending time with her family.

The 2006 ANZAC Tour will be Kristy's first trip overseas and she is looking forward to visiting the historic sites of World War 1. Kristy's great-grandfather served in World War 2 and was killed in action. Johnathon Ninyette trained at Claremont Barracks for a year before being posted into active service in New Guinea. He served as private in the 2/7th Australian Infantry Battalion. There he fought for over three years before being shot dead in May 1945. The war was to be over in just a few months’ time.

By making this trip, Kristy hopes to gain a better understanding of the courage and bravery of her great-grandfather and of all the servicemen and women who went away to war.

Luke Owen

Luke Owen is currently a Year 9 student at Exmouth District High School. He enjoys and excels in the majority of his subjects and has been the recipient of a number of school awards including the Highest Academic Achiever Award. In 2005 he was the overall state winner in the Graphic Design category of the “Help a Child Grow” art competition and for the past two years Luke has been a member of the Student Leadership Team and Student Representative on the Local Area Education Planning Committee. He has represented the school at numerous events including the local ANZAC and Remembrance Day services. Outside of school Luke is involved in a number of activities and sporting groups such as the Exmouth Youth Forum, Exmouth Tennis Club and the Exmouth Squash Club. Upon leaving school Luke hopes to pursue a career as a Diplomat or a Translator.

The ANZAC Student Tour will be Luke’s first time overseas and he is especially looking forward to visiting the battlefields of the Western Front. Two of Luke’s great-grandfathers and his great uncle served in World War II. Stanley Hallowell fought in Papua New Guinea as a Sergeant in the 2/2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion while Joseph Kermond was a Leading Aircraftman in the Royal Australian Air force. Luke’s great uncle, Douglas Cameron was a private in the 2/29th Australian Infantry Battalion and was a prisoner of war on the Thailand-Burma Railway. Luke is extremely proud to be representing his school, state and his nation on the ANZAC Student Tour 2006.

Courtney Terlick

Applecross Senior High School

At the time of the 2006 ANZAC tour, Courtney Terlick will be a Year 12 student attending Applecross Senior High School. At school she enjoys Drama and English Literature, and also has a keen interest in theatre, such as the school productions, for which she has designed and applied make up several times. Outside of school she enjoys the beach with friends and attending concerts.

Courtney enjoys the poetry of World War I, which sparked her interest in the ANZACs to begin with, encouraging her to find out more. She is most looking forward to seeing the sights in Europe and enjoying the culture, as well as visiting the war cemeteries, which she has heard is life-changing. She also hopes to use this experience to make some new friends and travel the world.

One of Courtney’s great uncles served in WW II, in the 44th Battalion, and his name is featured at the King’s Park Memorial. She also has other relatives who served in WW I but their details are yet to be discovered. Her grand mother is tracing the details of one particular uncle who is buried in France, and Courtney hopes to perhaps visit his grave whilst on tour. Courtney will be wearing her late grandfather’s medals on the trip.
